Vignoni Alto, is a small aggregate consisting of buildings belonging to the ancient homonymous castle. Its origins date back to the eleventh century, as possession of the Abbey of St. Anthony.
In the first half of the following century it became a possession of the Tignosi family, lords of Tintinnano (Rocca d'Orcia) and vassals of the Counts Aldobrandeschi of Santa Fiora, but in 1207 Vignoni was among the lands obligated by the city of Siena to pay a tax extraordinary. However, during the 13th and 14th centuries, passing the property of the Tignosi to Salimbeni, Vignoni and his bath managed to escape the Sienese annexation.

In the present fortified village of Vignoni you can still see a torn tower, with a mighty scarp at its base, which was the doorman, the heart of the Fortilizio. Even one of the ancient doors to the walled enclosure is still well preserved and next to the church of San Biagio.
Outside the door the view of the Orcia Valley is such as to guarantee its control. On the left stands the sailboat of the church, whose supporting tower leans outside the walls.
