Monastero di Sant'Anna in Camprena

PIENZA


The monastery of Saint Anne in Camprena is a sacred building, located in Camprena, in the township of Pienza, in the province of Siena,in the diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza. It was founded in 1324-1334 by Bernard Tolomei as a hermitage linked to the Benedictine order of the Congregation of Monte Oliveto. It was radically modified between the end of the XVth century and the beginning of the XVIth century and , later on, at the end of the XVIIIth century and beginning XIX th century, it underwent further modifications. The construction of the church was completed in 1517. The frescoes in the dining hall by Sodoma are quite important. They were realized between 1502 and 1503. They include the following : The Approval of Mount Oliveto’s rule created by Tolomei , by the bishop of Arezzo Guido Tarlati; The Deposition; A Madonna with Child, Saint Anne and two monks; three scenes from the Multiplication of Bread; and a grisaille decoration with Stories of the Life of Saint Anne, surrounded by “ grotesque” decorations.The monastery of Saint Anne in Camprena is a sacred building, located in Camprena, in the township of Pienza, in the province of Siena,in the diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza.
