CASTIGLIONE D'ORCIA

Campiglia d’Orcia is a High Medieval village that extends between Poggio dello Zoccolino and the Valle d’ Orcia The first human settlements date back to 973 A.D. Even now , Campiglia d’Orcia, maintains the structural plan that it had before the year one thousand: four roads that extend in a circular manner connected by numerous alleys.
The village, in the XII century, was under the domain of the Visconti family, one of the most important aristocratic families in Siena, that taking advantage of the conflict between Siena and Orvieto, tried to maintain their power with balanced politics. But in the 1300, the Visconti family began losing power and eventually submitted to Siena.
The village stands at the foot of a calcareous formation, on top of which was built a bell tower, that can be reached only by following a path. From there, one can enjoy a spectacular view of the entire Val d’Orcia and great part of Mount Amiata.Campiglia d’Orcia is a High Medieval village that extends between Poggio dello Zoccolino and the Valle d’ Orcia The first human settlements date back to 973 A.D.
