The origin of the iconographic model of this Virgin ascending to heaven lies in the legendary Assumption painted by Simone Martini on the wall of the Antiporto di Camollia, of which it constitutes a revised version from his time. With a realist effect still innovative at the dawn of the 16th century, Girolamo di Benvenuto revisits Simone's brilliant invention. Through the interplay of concentric circles that organize the presence of angels, saints, and prophets, witnessing the Virgin Mary's arrival among them from heaven, the space seems to contain the participants and, at the same time, draw upward the main protagonist of the event.
On the ground, in addition to Saints Francis of Assisi and Anthony of Padua, visible on either side of the abandoned tomb, a third witness observes the scene in the foreground, unwittingly becoming a participant: Saint Thomas, whose legendary skepticism is also known to the Virgin. Therefore, to provide him with a sort of proof of her ascension to heaven, Mary has just dropped the belt she had removed. This scene is quite common in Tuscany and Siena.
