DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
From the mid-17th century, when the energetic and monumental manner of the Carracci was abandoned in favor of a more persuasive and graceful style, Domenico Manetti's work became known for its more delicate and intimate inspiration. His Saint Augustine is indeed depicted in a post-Caravaggesque naturalistic manner. The portrait of this religious bishop and saint features a clear line, an analytical study, simplification, and purity of form. The new approach imbues the depicted sitter with a detached aristocracy in the most complete and shared interpretation of the spirit of the Counter-Reformation, in the vision of a new religious sentiment that takes on tones of intimate and human devotion.
Augustine is depicted here in his He's sitting at a table in his study, leafing through a book. His gaze, however, is turned upward, searching for the meaning of what he's reading.
The room opens onto a wide view of the surrounding countryside, its light seemingly flooding into the study.montal
