DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

Tempera-painted panel
Measures 105 x 62.5 cm.
Carved and gilded wooden frame

The panel was originally the central panel of a triptych whose side panels, depicting Saints Peter and Paul, are currently housed at the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena (inv. nos. 90 and 314). The author of this dismembered triptych is conventionally referred to as the Master of Sant'Angelo in Colle: according to Brandi, Carli and Torriti, he was a follower of Ambrogio Lorenzetti, active around 1340. From a typescript written in 1972 by the parish priest Don Antonio Brandi, we learn that the panel of the Madonna had been in the church of San Pietro in Sant'Angelo in Colle since at least 1760; in the 19th century, the building was in such poor condition that in 1889 construction began on a new church, dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario, to house the painting.
