Resti di crocifisso in legno di noce
Artist: Marco Romano
Year: 1300-10 ca.
Current location: Museo San Pietro, Civico e d'Arte Sacra
Original location: Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The work is attributed to Marco Romano and his collaborator, sculptors active in central Italy between the late 13th and early 14th centuries.
Made of painted wood, the crucifix depicts the dying Christ with his head bowed and his body marked by the wounds of the Passion.
The simple yet expressive modeling and the rendering of anatomical details recall the characteristics of Gothic sculpture.
Now housed in an exhibition space, it continues to bear witness to the devotional tradition of medieval Tuscany.
