Madonna del Rosario che salva una ragazza dall'annegamento San Quirico d'Orcia
Artist: Rutilio Manetti
Year: 1610
Current location: Collegiata dei Santi Quirico e Giulitta
Original location: Collegiata dei Santi Quirico e Giulitta
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The work was conceived by Francesco Vanni; this is confirmed by the drawing in the British Museum, London (inv. no. 1895. 9. 15. 586), comparable to a drawing of the same subject by Manetti (British Museum, inv. no. 1583. 8. 13.28). This drawing represents a later stage of development, closer to the painting, and consolidates the attribution to this artist. The dating is deduced from comparison with dated works by Manetti (e.g., "Martin V in Procession with the Statue of Saint Roch," Siena, Church of San Rocco, signed and dated 1610). As for the inscription, Naldi interprets it as a signature, while it should more likely be considered as an address written by Vanni's supplier or perhaps by the Rosario company, the client of the work, who could have purchased the canvas directly.
