The Sienese artist who created this panel takes his name from the city of Città di Castello, where another of his paintings, depicting another image of the Virgin and Child in "maestà," can be found today. The Maestà, especially in this tall format, was often commissioned for the meeting places of lay confraternities. In Siena, where devotion to the Virgin was particularly strong, it was a highly visible image, dominating the city's most important works of art.
