Vergine con Bambino di fine XIV secolo Montalcino
Artist: Bartolo di Fredi
Year: fine XIV secolo
Current location: Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli
Original location: Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
This Virgin and Child belongs to the iconographic category of representations known as "with the goldfinch": Jesus holds a curious little bird in his left hand, which he mistreats according to a symbolism alluding to the Passion of Christ, as can also be found elsewhere, particularly in Montalcino. The Virgin's right hand, which she holds out to her son, also bears strong similarities to the one housed in the local museum.
The work has been attributed to Bartolo di Fredi by Alessandro Bagnoli.
