The Parish Church of Santa Maria a Cosona, also known as Parish Church of Saints Laurentino and Pergentino, located in the municipality of Pienza, is an ancient place of worship that historically stood on a strategic road.

Although it is not located directly on the main route of the Via Francigena, it was positioned along an important route connecting it to the Via Lauretana.

Here are some key details about its history:
In the Middle Ages, it was the subject of a centuries-long dispute between the bishops of Siena and Arezzo over control of the parish churches.

The village of Cosona initially belonged to the Tolomei family, but the castle was destroyed by the Republic of Siena in 1393 due to a conspiracy.

Since 1465, the estate has belonged to the Bichi Ruspoli Forteguerri family, after the then Cardinal Niccolò Forteguerri purchased the castle, later transforming it into a fortified palace.
