Its construction likely dates back to the second half of the 11th century. The simple and evocative building, constructed of squared travertine stone, has a single nave with a small apse crowned with small arches and corbels decorated with animal head motifs.

The wooden trusses roof faces northwest, with a small portal opening onto the Via Francigena. There are many similarities with the portal of the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, both in terms of decorative motifs and layout.

Directly in front of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, there was a pilgrims' hospital, dependent on the Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, which was later converted into a simple residence.

Crossing the external portico, surmounted by a lunette, you enter a courtyard with an external loggia and a well bearing the date 1543. There is also a frieze and the coat of arms of Santa Maria della Scala.
